Today on Faithless Brewing, we take a dive on Fight Rigging, part of New Capenna’s cycle of build-around hideaway enchantments. This card looks wonky but it has already racked up a half dozen 5-0 finishes in Pioneer, each list more bizarre than the last. Have players been sleeping on this card?
Fight Rigging draws from a limited selection of high powered creatures to enable it. Rotting Regisaur and Shakdown Heavy are obvious, while Werewolf Pack Leader and Kazandu Mammoth offer more subtle ways to reach 7 power on curve. For the bold, there is Nullhide Ferox, and for the truly insane there is Thing in the Ice or pumping your Hooting Mandrills with Simic Charm (yes, this actually happened — see the “Monkeys on Ice” 5-0 list by twistling).
As for payoffs, there are two approaches. The first is to choose top end cards that are still castable without your enchantment. The Great Henge stands out here as it also wants high power creatures, while Turntimber Symbiosis and Valki, God of Lies interact favorably with the free cast ability of Hideaway. On the other hand, nothing says you can’t swing for the fences with Eldrazi, Ugin, or Omniscience. One player even notched a 5-0 with Massacre Wurms, Noxious Gearhulks, and Dreadfeast Demons (don’t try this at home!). Cards like Emergent Ultimatum might exist in the sweet spot of powerful enough to be game winning, but cheap enough to be ramp into fairly when Rigging is shut down.
We run down all the options and propose several new builds. David has his eye on Valki + Release to the Winds, and also explores a +1/+1 counter strategy where Fight Rigging has additional synergies. Does this deck want Incubation Druid?
On the Flashback, we continue our testing with Jinnie Fay, Jetmir’s Second. Searching for higher powered token makers, Dan explored the Cabaretti Kitchen power duo of Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar + Rocco alongside Academy Manufactor and Cookbook. He then went a little crazy with Gingerbread Cabin, pairing it with Galazeth Prismari and Bring to Light in a wild 5 color brew. Are these the builds that will make it rain cats and dogs? There’s only one way to find out.
